How it works

Three kinds of camera, one map.

Every pin tells you what you're about to get before you tap it, so there are no surprises: a live stream, a short looping clip, or a still image that refreshes.

Live streams

Continuous video from California's Caltrans network and Norway's Statens vegvesen motorway cameras. Watch traffic move in real time.

Looping clips

London's TfL JamCams publish short clips that refresh every few minutes. Around 900 of them, across the whole of Greater London.

Refreshed stills

Tens of thousands of webcams worldwide via Windy, plus road-camera stills in British Columbia, Calgary and New South Wales. The bulk of the 70,000.

Video wall

Ask for the nearest cameras and PlanetEar fills a multi-screen wall with up to twelve of them at once. Go full screen on iPad or Mac and leave it running.

Search or just say it

Type a place, or tap the mic and say "show me cameras near Oslo". The globe flies there and the cameras light up.

Street level too

Where Apple has coverage, drop into Look Around for a street-level view of any place you've flown to, cameras or not.

Coverage

Where the cameras come from.

Every camera is a public, openly published feed from the operator itself. PlanetEar doesn't host, record or re-stream anything.

WhatSourceNotes
Worldwide webcams Windy Tens of thousands of public webcams in most countries. Refreshed stills; density varies by region.

Counts are approximate and drift as operators add and retire cameras. Most of the 70,000 are refreshed stills, not video; the pin icon tells you which kind you're tapping. More regions are added over time.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are the cameras actually live?

Around 2,300 are continuous live video streams (California and Norway) and about 900 are short looping clips (London). The rest, the large majority, are still images that refresh on the operator's schedule, typically every few minutes. The pin shows you which kind before you tap.

Is my country covered?

Almost certainly for webcams: Windy covers most countries, so searching any city will usually find cameras. Dedicated traffic-camera networks are currently in the UK (London), the USA (California), Norway, Canada (British Columbia and Calgary) and Australia (New South Wales).

Do I need an account or an API key?

No. Cameras work the moment you open the app. There is no sign-up, nothing to paste in and nothing to pay.

Can I watch several cameras at once?

Yes. The video wall shows the nearest cameras to any place as a grid of up to twelve screens. On iPad and Apple Silicon Macs it runs full screen, which makes a nice ambient display.

Does it work on iPad and Mac?

Yes. PlanetEar runs on iPhone, iPad and any Mac with an M1 chip or later, from the App Store on each.

Does PlanetEar record or store what I watch?

No. Feeds go straight from the operator to your device. PlanetEar has no backend, no analytics and no account, so nothing you look at is logged anywhere.
